There are many reason why I want to be an Engineer and many more behind why I want to be a Civil Engineer. There are also a few boring reason for why I chose Michigan State University.
Okay lets see, the reasons for choosing Michigan State University are as follows: My mother graduated from MSU so I am following in her footsteps only with a different major, because my dad works for the college I receive half off tuition which was really a deal breaker with my current financial situation, and finally it was too easy, most people do not like change and I am one of those people. MSU required the smallest adjustment or life change so once I got in it was a no-brainer.
So why engineering? Well as covered in previous posts, I grew up in an extremely self sufficient family, meaning when anything needed to be done there were no phone calls made. Simply a trip to the store and a few hours later one of my parents would have the problem fixed. Growing up around this I caught on and felt like I needed to learn these things to survive in the real life but I was wrong. My parents turned out to much handier than the average person and I turned out to be a quick learner so now I know how to change my oil in less than ten minutes, rewire a wall outlet and even lay brick or block like a mason. So when I started to excel in math classes and it became evident I was too smart to go to trade school I applied to engineering schools like Michigan State.
Okay, so why did you go with Civil Engineering? Good question, as mentioned in earlier posts I fell in love with overwhelming structures like the Mackinac Bridge at an early age. So when I realized I had the brain capacity and will power to build these monuments that seem larger than life I was hooked on that dream. There is also a more ethical reason behind this choice. As I have recently learned, engineers have a strict set of ethics that are followed by each engineer. This has to be one of the most important things I have learned dunging my brief time at Michigan State. Once one becomes an engineer that person has been accepted into a brotherhood that is dedicated to helping others. When I graduate with my degree in hand I would love to help those most in need by going to places like Africa and improve their lives by organizing roads and buildings and giving the strong infrastructure they need and deserve.
With all these reasons who would not want to become an engineer? Actually one should do what makes them happiest while improving the lives of those around them. So here's to hoping that is what engineering is for me and that I have indeed found my calling.
